Dr. Giroux Answers Your Questions – 3/23

Once or twice a week, Dr. Giroux goes through the questions asked on the tag board and presents answers to the best of her knowledge. If you do not see your answer here, please be patient, as we go through all the messages. If you have a question for Dr. Giroux, you may also comment on any post here. Please note due to time constraints and the nature of some questions, Dr. Giroux may not answer every one.

Kelly: My 6 week old “mini” dachshund weighs 4.32 pounds. Is he going to be big for his breed?

I would contact your breeder and ask them this question. Your breeder will be familiar with the normal size and growth pattern for your pup.

Paige: My cat got in a fight with a squirrel, should I be worried about the cat’s health?

Any bite wound carries some risk of infection. Squirrels are not known to be carriers of any particular diseases, but if your cat has bite wounds, I would have them checked out by your veterinarian.

A-roze: My 7 year old dog had 2 tumors removed. He has one now on his rectum, how soon should it be removed?

You should take him in and have your veterinarian examine the growth, and get his/her advice.

Kay: Is there a blood test that could diagnose autoimmune arthritis in a Cavalier King Charles?

This question is beyond the scope of this column.

Kai Jacques: I have a 13-year-old female cat who is walking stiffly. I’m assuming arthritis. What can I give her?

Cats can respond well to glucosamines. You might consider trying Glycoflex, which is a source of amino acids that are precursors to glucosamines and can be beneficial for stiff joints. If the Glycoflex does nothelp. Consult your veterinarian.

Armani: What is the best dog food possible for a Shih-tzu? I believe my dog may have food allergies.

Each dog is an individual, and there is no one food that can be best for all dogs or all dogs of one breed. I would recommend a high quality premium dog food as they are typically the best foods. I also think that any commercial dog food should be supplemented with vitamins and other nutrients appropriate for your dog’s lifestyle.
